Lebanese Politicians on the soccer field

In light of what we discussed in class today, I thought this may be of interest to you all.

While we discussed soccer in relation to politics of different nations, this shows another interesting sphere of politics and soccer– various rivaling political groups in Lebanon. This talks about a soccer match among political groups in Lebanon. There are no spectators due to risks of violence. It seems to illustrate a “peaceful” soccer match with threats of violence looming above it.

While political implications arise out of the existing World Cup, this friendly soccer match is interesting in that the soccer match was precisely organized because of politics. Sami Gemayel said, “the message is that sports can unite the Lebanese, and this is a very important since politics unfortunately is not uniting them.”

A Hezbollah lawmaker remarked, “I hope that this good sportsmanship will reflect itself on politics as well.”

It is interesting that these lawmakers and politicians see the peaceful soccer match as a potential instrument to hold various factions together despite their political differences.

Do you think that this is perhaps too idealistic?

Orientalism

Sur l’Orientalisme

Je voulais ajouter à notre discussion jeudi.

Nous avons discuté des mots dans la definition de l’orientalisme. Je pense que  les orientalistes peuvent avoir << l’intention de comprendre >> mais cette intention ne justifie pas l’effort échoué de saisir entièrement l’Orient. La probleme est que l’intention de comprendre est basé sur le fantasme des Orientalistes qui ont déjà une idée de quoi l’Orient est. Par exemple, <<La Femme Dans la Peinture Orientaliste>> de Lynne Thornton écrit, << beaucoup d’artistes francais… succombèrent momentanément à la turcomanie sans avoir pourtant jamais mis les pieds au Proche-Orient>> (8). On sent que le fantasme est un element plus dominant que la precision dans le domaine de l’Orientalisme.

En plus, il y a plusieurs personnes qui avaient voyagés à l’Orient. Pourtant, je pense qu’ils ne pouvaient pas penetrer l’interieur de la culture d’Orient. Ils voyaient seulement l’exterieur comme les couleurs exotiques et les vêtements étranges. On n’entend pas des discussions sur comment les gens d’Orient pensent ou les nombreux dimensions de cette culture. Par exemple, les Orientalistes ont écrit souvent que la culture d’Orient est barbare parce que la culture semble trop différente de celle d’Occident. En plus, l’Harem était interdit aux étrangères, particulièrement les hommes. Pourtant, il y a des specialistes et des artistes qui avaient décrit l’harem comme s’ils étaient la. Peut-être, l’harem a attiré le fantasme de ces gens parce qu’il était inconnu et interdit.
