Darryl Sterk Speaks on Translation and Sustainability
At the workshop on Translation and Sustainability sponsored by the Humanities Research Institute from June 8-9, 2018, Professor Darryl Sterk from Lingnan University in Hong Kong gave a presentation about the endangered indigenous Taiwanese language Seediq. Of particular interest in the talk is how concepts of nature and environment are understood in Seediq, and how efforts to preserve Seediq language are also related to the preservation of Seediq culture and environment.
Call for Student Vloggers for the Humanities Research Center
To understand and analyze the experiences of the historic inaugural class of students at Duke Kunshan University the Humanities Research Center (HRC) is launching a pilot project recruiting student fellows to produce regular vlogs on their experience at DKU for the Student Experience Pilot Documentary Project. Call for HRC Launch Event Seminar Fellows
Duke Kunshan University will formally launch its Humanities Research Center on September 14-15, 2018, featuring two days of lectures, discussions, and arts events on The Future of the Humanities.
The launch event features keynote speeches, roundtable discussions and seminar meetings with four distinguished visitors:
- Ding Naifei, leading scholar of feminist studies, queer theory, and Chinese culture and literature.
- Ranjana Khanna, international literary critic and theorist renowned for her work on psychoanalysis and postcolonial literature.
- Jeffrey Wasserstrom, renowned historian of modern China.
- Yan Lianke, one of contemporary China’s foremost novelists.
A select number of DKU students will be invited to participate in a one-hour seminar with one of the four distinguished visitors. (more…)

James Miller, co-director of Duke Kunshan University Humanities Resesrch Center explains his vision for planetary humanities, and his motivation for leaving his job in Canada to come to China to work at Duke Kunshan University.
Call for PETAL Lab Student Fellows
The Planetary Ethics and Artificial Intelligence Lab (PETAL) is recruiting six student fellows for the 2018-2019 academic year.
Students will attend lab meetings, carry out research tasks under the supervision of the co-directors, receive training in humanistic research to carry out an independent research project, and organize one student event each semsester. (more…)

Report on the Workshop on Translation and Sustainability
Translation and Sustainability, the inaugural workshop of the Humanities Research Center took place on June 8-9, 2018 at Duke Kunshan University. The workshop brought together twelve international scholars working on issues related to translation and sustainability, with Greater Global China as the paradigm.
The two-day schedule consisted of a series of presentations and discussions of working papers, with the view of producing an edited collection of papers that would have an important impact in this interdisciplinary field. (more…)
