Classical Buddhist thinkers had a lot to say about the nature of reality and human psychology, but unlike Western philosophers, they largely remained silent about sociopolitical issues.
Can the Buddhist tradition offer us any useful resources for thinking about justice and desert in society? The present talk will discuss key Indian Buddhist scriptures that articulate criteria for evaluating individuals in the context of spiritual practice. I will suggest that they articulate a meritocratic principle of evaluation within a worldview that differs from those informing ancient Chinese and current Western theories.
