Film Society Screening: Lan Yu (2001) | Nov. 27

Thursday night is film night! This week, the Film Society presents 蓝宇 Lan Yu (2001), one of the landmark works of queer Chinese cinema.

Join us for a powerful screening that continues the “Censored” Series and highlights a film long kept from public view.

Set in Beijing in the years leading up to 1989, the film follows the turbulent relationship between a wealthy businessman and a young architecture student. Their story moves between desire, disappointment, and moments of quiet devotion, offering a rare portrait of gay life in a rapidly changing China. Director 關錦鵬 Stanley Kwan brings a queer sensitivity to the material that made the film both a cinematic breakthrough and a target of censorship.

Hosted by professor Zairong Xiang!
