In her study of Chinese global historiography since the 1980s, Zhu proposes “rooted globalism” as an analytical lens. This framework examines how Chinese scholars intervene in global historical scholarship, emphasizing their intellectual agency and the transnational networks that challenge Eurocentric narratives. Central to this approach is a “spatial-temporal matrix,” which Zhu employs to reveal historical temporalities and spatial connections that transcend the linear narratives and nation-state comparative frameworks of conventional global intellectual history.
