Renhao Guo
My name is Renhao Guo, and from Qingdao, Shandong province. During my high school years, the book Sophie’s World initiated my journey into philosophy and made me fall in love with it. To me, both Eastern and Western philosophy are the crystallization of human wisdom, each with its own characteristics. However, Chinese philosophy particularly attracts me because it originates from the land where I am rooted. My hometown is in Shandong, the birthplace of Confucius and Mencius, and I am also very enthusiastic about the Daoist philosophy of Laozi and Zhuangzi. Since childhood, I have been educated in Confucian philosophy, but I have never conducted in-depth and systematic research or application of it.I believe DKU Harmony Lab can give me a great opportunity to explore one of the most brilliant stars among the various schools of thought in China.
Qirui Lei
My name is Qirui Lei and I am a first-year student at Duke Kunshan University. Since junior high school, I have always been very interested in the topic of feminism, especially in the exploration of the path to women’s liberation. I am especially intrigued by how traditional Chinese ethics can be rethought in light of women’s experiences and feminist critiques. After studying Confucian feminism, I have developed a deeper and renewed understanding of Confucian concepts such as ren 仁 (humaneness) and xiao 孝(filiality), and how these ideas of family ethics and relational personality can be critically reinterpreted in feminist theory. The Harmony Lab’s commitment to interdisciplinary and culturally grounded research strongly resonates with my academic interests, envisioning a new path for the true abundance of women and for achieving social harmony. In the lab, I hope to deepen my engagement with feminist reinterpretations of Confucian philosophy and contribute to conversations about ethical harmony in contemporary societies.
