2021 Fall Conference Student Report – Chen Qiufan Student Seminar

An Exploratory Science Fiction Journey of a Storyteller: Mr. Stanley (Qiufan) Chen’ s Student Seminar

By Dongkun Lyu

Started with a short introduction from the student leader, the whole seminar went smoothly in a peaceful afternoon. The student leader asked Mr. Chen a question as a brief introduction – which identity does he prefer among all the identities he has. His answer was, “a storyteller.”

Students, many of whom were Mr. Chen’s book fans,  brought excitement to the seminar and were eager to ask questions. Many even urged him to publish more books soon.

Regarding questions related to modern cutting-edge technologies, especially artificial intelligence, Mr. Chen mentioned the development of some cutting-edge technologies and expressed his imagination. Of course, he also admitted that science fiction writers cannot predict the future, they just imagine the future as much as possible. He proposed that when one imagines enough, there will always be one or two that becomes a reality.

Responding to questions about his book, Mr. Chen mentioned that some of the experiences in the book are based on the investigation of anthropology showing humanistic characteristics and ethical care. He also explored some humanities topics in the context of science fiction.

After listening to some students’ views on the “idea literature” and the description of their own literary creation experience, Mr. Chen shared some useful suggestions based on his own writing and encouraged more students to be persistent in creating.

After the discussion, Mr. Chen autographed his books for the students, expressed his gratitude towards their love of his books, and sent his best wishes.

The seminar ended with a casual chat and with tea and snacks with Mr. Chen.
