Superdeep #16: “ChatGPT and We” (with Tim Fitz (turnitin)) | Feb 1, 10:30am

Having heard much from chatty AI lately, let us humans do some talking again. Join us for a Superdeep conversation on how “ChatGPT and We” might carry on together. We’ll be joined by philosophers, computer scientists, and others from DKU, as well as special guest Tim Fitz (turnitin).

As always, everyone is welcome to join; no prior knowledge of philosophy (or computer science) is required. And, as always, snacks and refreshments will be served at the meeting.

For DKU faculty this will be the first of a possible double-feature that day, being followed by CTL’s T&L at lunch meeting on “AI-assisted teaching and learning” (12:00pm, IB 2050).

Student Report: Superdeep #14 “Knowing One’s Dreams” by Weifan (Michelle) Mo

Michelle attracted us by starting with a general discussion of the intended object(s) of our investigations into dreams and distinguished different disciplines and objects of dream research. The first object is a scientific mechanism underlying the phenomenon of dreaming. The second object is the happenings in the dreams (dream contents) which can be divided into two forms, content assisted by third-party empirical evidence and content which appear to the dreamers in a retrospective sense.

Student Report on Superdeep #12: “Anscombe on Basic Action: Doubts about Doubts” by Nathan Hauthaler

Superdeep #12 is part of Superdeep philosophy workshop series led by Professor Nathan Hauthaler.

G.E.M. Anscombe (Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe) was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century whose research mainly involved the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind/psychology, philosophy of action, and moral philosophy.

This seminar focused on the Philosophy of action field. Professor Nathan Hauthaler led students into this field by first clarifying the definition of basic action, which was defined as “action that is not done by means of doing another”.

The topic and notions that appeared in this seminar were mostly centered on the philosophy of action which is an important field concerning human bodily movement and intention. Both the question “why” and description of action were essential concepts in Anscombe’s work Intention, a classic of 20th-century philosophy. Superdeep #11: “Leo Strauss and Islamic Political Thought” (Rasoul Namazi) September 22, 2022, 6pm.

The host of tonight’s Superdeep session, Prof. Nathan Hauthaler started this Superdeep session with a warm welcome and introduction towards Prof. Namazi, an intelligent and broadly knowledgeable Iranian educated in France. Prof. Namazi delivered this session based on his recently published book: Leo Strauss and Islamic Political Thought. He started his talk with a brief biography of the German-American philosopher Leo Strauss (1899-1973). Prof. Namazi highlighted Strauss’ experience in training many students during his scholarship career, especially at the University of Chicago (1949-1969).
