Third Space Lab (TSL) welcomes the DKU community to attend Dr. Joana Almeida’s talk and to discuss some of the challenges of intercultural education and international mobility with her. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. This event will be recorded and posted on the Third Space Lab Sakai site and on the Humanities Research Center page for all to view.

Featured Speaker: Dr. Joana Almeida, Independent Researcher, Ph.D. in Education from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and former visiting scholar in International Education at SIT Graduate Institute (USA).

Talk: International Education: Can intercultural journeys have a transformative role in life?

Abstract:  Building on her intercultural experiences as an exchange student, visiting scholar and researcher in the UK and the USA, this talk will allow DKU students to reflect on the role that intercultural journeys or encounters may have in their lives. To this end, Dr. Almeida will share the intercultural rewards and challenges she faced in order to break down strategies for maximizing intercultural learning abroad (for DKU students currently abroad or planning to go abroad) and at home (for all DKU students interested in learning from cultural diversity on campus).

In addition to her personal experiences, Dr. Almeida will give examples from her teaching and research with international students, as well as activities she developed as a former volunteer of a European student association. She will also discuss relevant resources that can contribute to quality student experiences abroad.

In bringing together scholarship and personal experience, this talk offers a space for reflection that aims to help members of the DKU community gain a renewed awareness of their own intercultural stories and empower them as learners and (future) professionals.
