Student Report on Improving International Learning Through Virtual Exchange

This event features Robert O’Dowd from the University of León, Spain, on Developing authentic international learning experiences through Virtual Exchange.

Reported by Vicky Yongkun Wu, Class of 2026

Virtual Exchange (VE), also Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) or telecollaboration, refers to students and teachers’ engagement in intercultural collaborative projects with partners from other countries using digital technologies. In the post-pandemic and technologically advanced era, VE is crucial in fostering a range of employability skills, preparing students for physical mobility, and promoting university inclusivity.

In the research talk, Prof Emmanuelle Chiocca first briefly introduced the Third Space Lab and Dr. O’Dowd. The Third Space Lab focuses on identity, language, language learning motivation, and student change in intercultural and translingual environments. Major events of the lab include guest lectures, Brownbag lunch talks delivered by LCC faculty members, workshops, etc. According to Prof Chiocca’s introduction, Dr. O’Dowd is an Associate Professor of English as a Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Leon, Spain, and have published works on the application of Virtual Exchange in higher education. Student Report on Superdeep #12: “Anscombe on Basic Action: Doubts about Doubts” by Nathan Hauthaler

Superdeep #12 is part of Superdeep philosophy workshop series led by Professor Nathan Hauthaler.

Reported by Dongkun Lyu, Class of 2023.

G.E.M. Anscombe (Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe) was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century whose research mainly involved the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind/psychology, philosophy of action, and moral philosophy.

This seminar focused on the Philosophy of action field. Professor Nathan Hauthaler led students into this field by first clarifying the definition of basic action, which was defined as “action that is not done by means of doing another”.

The topic and notions that appeared in this seminar were mostly centered on the philosophy of action which is an important field concerning human bodily movement and intention. Call for Proposals from A Library of Things at MACHANG is seeking proposals for an upcoming three-week residency at MACHANG

What is a thing? What is an object? These seemingly simple yet profoundly complex ontological questions have been explored by artists and thinkers across culture and time. In the specific setting of contemporary exhibition making (a specialty of MACHANG for almost a decade with the booming contemporary art scene in Shanghai and in China at large), what matter matters in an art exhibition? What does not? What matters before the installation of an exhibition and after its show time is over? What do we do with the materials left behind an art exhibition – the frames, pigments, dry walls, etc. – other than throwing them in the garbage and turning them into waste? How might we archive these things before and after their use value has been exploited?

This lecture by Professor Yuhang Zhao was a part of HRC’s Anthropocene XR Lab‘s Talk Series. Click here for upcoming events from the Lab.

Reported by Vicky Yongkun Wu, Class of 2026.

Social VR refers to VR platforms where people communicate and socialize in the form of avatars. With the advancement of technology, social VR is increasingly influencing the next generation. However, current VR technology mainly relies on realistic visual feedback to provide an immersive experience to sighted people. Most VR applications are not accessible to visually impaired people, preventing them from benefiting from this important class of emerging technology. Prof Yuhang Zhao’s talk focused on her research on social VR accessibility and inclusion.

Talk Introduction

Social VR has the potential to become the next generation of the Internet. However, current VR technology mainly relies on realistic visual feedback to provide an immersive experience to sighted people. Most VR applications are not accessible to visually impaired people, preventing them from benefiting from this important class of emerging technology. In this talk, I’ll describe my research on social VR accessibility and inclusion, where we explore avatar accessibility and inclusion for disabled people and design audio-based VR techniques to make avatar dynamics in social VR accessible to visually impaired people. I will also reflect on general accessibility guidelines for VR.
