Sergej Milinkovic-Savic: The Next 100 Euro Player

By | March 30, 2018

If you haven’t heard of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, it would have been tough to blame you as recently as 2 years ago, but as of today the 23-year-old Serbian midfielder stands a chance to become one of the most expensive players of all time this summer. Milinkovic-Savic has been dominating Italian soccer at Lazio this season. He has contributed 11 goals and 9 assists through 37 appearances across all competitions, while whoscored.com gives him an average score of 7.38 per game.[1] For comparison, this average rating is slightly higher than that of Paul Pogba who averages a 7.36 and significantly higher than N’Golo Kante’s 7.24 average rating. These are two of the most dominant midfielders in the Premier League, and as rumor has it Sergej Milinkovic-Savic may soon be joining them.

Lazio’s sporting director has already stated that Sergej would cost a figure, “well over 80-90 million,[2]” euros after reports have linked him to such clubs as Manchester United, Manchester City, and Real Madrid. With the rising transfer fees that the soccer world has witnessed the last few years, this comes as no surprise as the Lazio man looks to be one of, if not, the most promising young midfielders in the world. His combination of size, 6 feet three inches, goals, defensive contribution, and ability to control and distribute the ball in tight spaces makes him a true all-around midfielder (watch here to see these abilities demonstrated) that almost any team in the world could do with. As a Manchester United fan, Sergej is my ideal signing for the summer. A midfield trio of Pogba, Matic, and Milinkovic-Savic would be the best in the premier league, and arguably the best in the world. With Pogba and Milinkovic-Savic able to do a bit of everything, while excelling going forward, and Matic sitting in front of the center backs linking up play, the trio should be able to break down almost any side in the world.

While there is no real guarantee where Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will end up playing next year, he stands a really good chance to be the next 100-million-euro player in world football. With almost every big team in the world linked to him, it would be very surprising if Lazio is able to hang on to him this summer. Due to the rising transfer fees in the sport, Milinkovic-Savic might even top Paul Pogba’s record breaking transfer fee from a two years ago, and as a Manchester United fan I just hope it is to play alongside him.
