Health Humanities: People

Co-Directors

Professor Benjamin Anderson

Prof. Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Global Health at Duke Kunshan University where he teaches and conducts global health research in emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, and viral respiratory pathogens. His research projects focus on using novel surveillance and diagnostic techniques to better track and understand diseases in settings where new viruses are likely to emerge. As a trained laboratorian, Prof. Anderson also works with international partners to build research and laboratory capacity in low and middle income countries. His current capacity building work includes a partnership between Duke Kunshan University, the Global Health Initiative Indonesia, and the Faculty of Public Health, University of Indonesia

Professor Kyle Fruh

Prof. Fruh is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Duke Kunshan University where he teaches in the core curriculum and in the Ethics and Leadership Major. His research falls in the areas of ethical theory and applied ethics and at their intersection. His ongoing research projects concern climate change ethics, promissory obligation, and moral heroism, among other things.

Professor Kaley Clements

Prof. Clements is an Assistant Professor of Documentary and Digital Media Arts with expertise in documentary, filmmaking, photography, visual narratives, aural storytelling, and soundscape design. His research focuses on where social conflict, climate change, and the loss of diversification converge under the power structures of the globalizing economy. His current collaboration projects include a documentary photographic essay and designing the soundscape for an animated film with James Wilson, Health Education Coordinator at The Plumas County Public Health Agency. The two-part project draws awareness to the impact of the opioid epidemic in rural America.

He is a lifetime fellow at V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His artwork and compositions have been exhibited, performed and collected in the USA, Europe, Iran and China. He is the co-founder of DOGMA Lab, a trans-disciplinary design lab based in China. His most recent works include explorations in bio-harmonic AI musical performances, mechanical life and AI sculptures and research into methods, processes, new materials and digital fabrication tools within design practices.

Professor Vivian (Weijing) Xu

Prof. Vivian Xu is an Assistant Professor of Media and Arts at Duke Kunshan University and media artist, designer and researcher. Her work explores the boundaries between bio and electronic media in creating new forms of machine logic, speculative life and sensory systems, and often take the form of object, installation and/or wearable. She has shown, lectured, and performed at various institutions in Asia, the US, Europe and Australia. Vivian co-founded Dogma Lab, a trans-disciplinary design lab in Shanghai that is dedicated to creating experimental research at the intersection of design, technology, art and science. Her most recent works investigate the animal / machine interfaces, cybernetics and research into fabrication methods, processes, and biomaterials within design practices.
