For Argentina, it is all about 
Messi. He is the best player on the planet and without him Argentina would not even be talked about. At 30 years old this could be Messi’s last world cup opportunity. Messi has been to 4 straight finals including 3 Copa Americas and 1 World Cup, yet he has not won one. This year, Messi will be on a mission to make sure he gets the elusive World Cup victory. The World Cup victory is the one thing missing from Messi’s legacy and winning would silence anyone who doubts him. With Gonzalo Higuain playing at a high level and the emergence of Paulo Dybala, Messi will have the best help he has had in his career. Argentina might have the best attacking unit of any team in the world cup.
Why they wont win:
How much does Argentina have besides Messi will always be the question? This year their attack is amazing, but how good is their midfield and defense. Messi and the attack can only take Argentina so far in the World Cup. A team that is strong all the way through could give Argentina real trouble. Argentina has also been accustomed to not playing well on the biggest stage. They have lost the last 4 finals they have been apart of with Messi on the team. Will they finally be able to get over the hump and win?
X-Factor: Javier Mascherano / Angel Di Maria
We know Argentina can score and then the question will be how will their midfield and defense do. Mascherano is a staple at the defensive midfield and he will need to dominate his position for Argentina to win. Di Maria will be a huge in the transition from defense to offense and in getting Messi and the goal scorers the ball.
Betting Advice:
At 8 to 1, I like Argentina’s value. I think they have a stronger team than they did in 2014 where they were the runner ups. If the draw goes the right way, Argentina could have a decently easy run at first, which will save fresh legs. I like Argentina as a bet to win the World Cup because of the good value and of course Messi.
