Group D, the group of death, is undoubtedly one of the toughest groups drawn for the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. With 3 teams ranked in the top 10 FIFA Women’s rankings (USA (2), Sweden (5), Australia (10) ), competition to make it out of the group will be stiff (1). The US team are undeniably the favorites to top Group D, boasting an impressive record against all 3 opposing teams, having consistently dominated them in previous competitions. Sweden will definitely give them a run for their money though, especially with Pia Sundhage guiding their ship. Sweden and the US are certainly huge favorites to make it through the group, the more unpredictable aspect is who will come out on top of the group (2) (Julie Foudy goes through some potential scenarios for the US team and what coming 1st or 2nd out of the group would mean for the rest of the tournament). Don’t count out Nigeria or Australia though, as the two teams will definitely put up fierce competition to make it through the group too. What might end up giving the US the edge is the wide fan base that will certainly turn up in support of the team as games will be played in neighboring Canada.
We’ll all be sitting on the edge of our seats to see how this one turns out!
