Kinesin Proteins listed by Organism – extended table

A large number of sequences showing evolutionary relatedness to the kinesin motor domain have now been deposited into the databases. Based on sequence similarities, most of these proteins can be assigned to one of fourteen families or groups. The kinesin families or groups have recently been renamed (see Nomenclature). The new names of the families (with the previous names in parentheses) are: Kinesin-1 (KHC or kinesin heavy chain), Kinesin-2(KRP85/95), Kinesin-3 (Unc104/Kif1), Kinesin-4 (Chromokinesin/KIF4), Kinesin-5 (BimC), Kinesin-6 (MKLP1), Kinesin-7 (CENP-E), Kinesin-8 (KIP3), Kinesin-9Kinesin-10Kinesin-11Kinesin-12Kinesin-13 (MCAK/KIF2), and Kinesin-14 (C-terminal motor). The Orphan kinesins are those that have been analyzed for relatedness to other kinesin proteins, but are as yet ungrouped. The new family names are shown in the table below with the former family names in parentheses. The table below contains both complete and partial motor domain sequences.

Key to labels used in the table: Entries highlighted in yellow have not yet been analyzed to determine the relatedness of the protein to other kinesin proteins. These sequences are denoted TBD, indicating that the family assignment has yet to be determined. Partial motor domain sequences are indicated in the table with an F (for fragment). Entries for which genomic sequence is available are indicated by the label GThe text entries in red are likely to change. Uncertain indicates that these entries may be kinesin motor domain homologues, but they lack crucial amino acid residues that would make them functional kinesins. In some cases, there may be errors in the predicted sequences.
