Technical Electives

Technical Electives

Completion of the Masters degree in Engineering Management requires students to complete at least four technical electives.  Approved technical electives are offered by the Pratt School of Engineering, the Fuqua School of Business, and the Duke University School of Law, in addition to the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science.  Partnerships with each of these schools and departments allow our MEM students to customize their degree by choosing from a wide range of technical electives, in a variety of disciplines, and according to personal interests, professional goals, and industry trends.  Additionally, currently enrolled, degree-seeking students may take technical electives at North Carolina State University,  the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Greensboro, or Charlotte, and North Carolina Central University through the Interinstitutional Agreement.  If there is a specific topic you are particularly interested in but are unable to find a class in which it is covered, you may pursue an independent study by identifying an interested and willing faculty member to oversee the course.

Graduate Technical Electives

Master of Engineering Management students may take approved technical electives in other programs and departments across campus; however, not all graduate courses will count as a technical elective.  Below is a list of graduate courses that have been approved and rejected as technical electives for MEM students.  Course offerings change every semester, so please be aware that not every approved course will be available for you to take.

Graduate courses outside of the Master of Engineering Management Program require the instructor’s permission to enroll and it is ultimately up to the instructor to determine whether or not MEM students will be allowed into a particular class.  Decisions are based on classroom size, enrollment caps, students’ academic/personal fit for the class, instructor willingness to take additional students, etc.  Please understand that, just as you are given priority for MEMP courses, students of other programs may be given priority for their courses; therefore, some courses may be limited to students of the program in which the course is offered.

Fuqua School of Business Electives

Master of Engineering Management students may take approved technical electives at the Fuqua School of Business, on a space-available basis.  In order to enroll in Fuqua courses, students will be required to complete a permission form which includes a classroom norms clause and The Fuqua School of Business Honor Code.

Below is a list of all Fuqua courses that have been approved and rejected as technical electives for MEM students.  Course offerings change every semester, so please be aware that not every approved course will be available for you to take. Once we receive a finalized list of available Fuqua courses for non-Fuqua students for the upcoming term, it will be posted to this page as the Fuqua Available Courses document. Students may only seek enrollment in the courses listed. Note that certain courses may be taken for credit and some are only audit. Please ensure your registration form matches the grading basis (credit/audit) for a particular course or your request will be denied.

Available Fuqua courses require the instructor’s permission to enroll and it is ultimately up to the instructor to determine whether or not MEM students will be allowed into a particular class.  Decisions are based on classroom size, enrollment caps, students’ academic/personal fit for the class, instructor willingness to take additional students, etc.  Please understand that we work closely with the Fuqua Registrar’s Office to make classes available to you, but course availability and enrollment are not guaranteed.  If a course is not listed on the Fuqua Available Courses document, it is NOT ACCEPTABLE to contact the instructor for permission to enroll in the course.
