Training

Saturday January 27th, 2023
9:30am-1:00pm

in the East and West Duke buildings on East Campus

Our training event is held at the beginning of EVERY SEMESTER. Local teachers and community members hold training sessions that will help to prepare you for your service-learning experience

We share this event with America Reads, America Counts, and Jumpstart

Who should attend?

⭐ALL PFS STUDENTS who are enrolled in Education service-learning classes

NEW PFS STUDENTS should attend three sessions. One must be Foundations of Engagement or Racial Equity. The other two can be chosen by the student.

RETURNING PFS STUDENTS should attend two sessions of their choice

What if I can’t make it to the training event?

This training is an important part of your preparation to engage with the Durham community. Our speakers have been chosen for their long experience and valuable insight in this area. We encourage you to make every possible effort to attend. If you absolutely cannot attend, please email your professor (copy joanna.middleton@duke.edu and samir.sefiane) with an explanation and request to be excused.

Make-up training will be arranged for excused students in a couple of weeks, and will involve an additional session of “Foundations of Engagement” with Alyssa Florwick.

How do I pick which sessions to attend?

Other than the required sessions for new students, think about where you will be volunteering and what information could be the most useful to you.

If you haven’t yet started choosing a placement, follow the instructions here to start the process.

What if I’m also working with the ARAC or JumpStart programs?

If PfS sessions are in conflict with an ARAC or JumpStart session, prioritize your PfS requirements. ARAC and JumpStart will share the information you need for their programs later.
