Things to know

  • A site-specific orientation session will be offered – this can be counted as part of your service-learning hours. The IE director will provide more details.
  • Tutoring sessions occur every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 – 7. All tutors are asked to arrive by 5:45.
  • The tutoring program is located in the facilities of Iglesia Emanuel, an Hispanic Presbyterian Church. The location is an affinity space where families feel comfortable, in contrast to school-based programs which can feel more stressful
  • Tutees come from a number of different schools, and the program reaches out to the teachers to understand the areas of most need for each tutee.
  • Although the program primarily serves 1st through 8th graders, older students are accepted when they can be paired with a qualified tutor.
  • We offer activities on site for the adults during tutoring time. All volunteers are encouraged to meet their tutee’s adults and communicate as needed. We will always have translators available to assist. The adults will not remain in the tutoring room between 6 – 7.

Building trusting, caring relationships is essential to the success of the program!

From Margaret – program founder:

“The Emanuel Learning Center was formed to offer one-on-one tutoring for Hispanic students, from grades 1 – 12. Currently in its 4th year, this program has proven to be a very important academic and mentoring resource, earning enthusiastic accolades from both the parents of the children enrolled, as well as the tutors. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 – 7, our center is buzzing with the sounds of students reading, improving their math skills, and gaining needed confidence to advance and excel academically. We have Chromebooks available for each student, as well as many educational resources to enhance the tutoring experience. All tutoring is done in English, except for new arrivals. Only bi-lingual tutors will be paired with tutees who mostly need ASOL assistance.”
