DMC’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity is inherent to the mission of the Duke Microbiome Center (DMC) to cultivate and support microbiome science at Duke University. Within the DMC, we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion as fundamental to our success and excellence. This commitment is motivated by our understanding and value placed on (i) diversity as an important parameter in any ecosystem, (ii) diversity within human populations under study in microbiome science, and (iii) the critical need to increase diversity within the community of microbiome scientists. This understanding compels us to lead in the development and implementation of innovative approaches to achieve the following ends:
- Building an inclusive culture characterized by civility, accountability, equity, and mutual respect;
- Increasing numbers of underrepresented groups in student, fellow, faculty, and staff positions in the microbiome sciences;
- Improving the cultural competence of the DMC community through diversity education and programming;
- Advancing health equity by making a significant impact on reducing disparities through research, service, and practice.
In addition to supporting and engaging in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the broader Duke community, the DMC is currently offering the following programs:
