OpSwap Recap: Healthcare Improvement with Dr. Shah

On Wednesday March, 21 Dr. Kevin Shah lead the second IHI OpSwap for this year. Students from the School of Medicine, Fuqua Business School and Sanford School of Public Policy were in attendance. Dr. Shah’s talk focused on the importance of quality in healthcare, and how definition of quality can vary based on the perspective of providers, patients, and payers.

Dr. Shah also talked about the principles of quality improvement, including the SixSigma and Lean models – and how these methods have been implemented to improve quality and safety in other fields, such as the aviation industry.

Dr. Shah then discussed ongoing quality improvement and patient safety efforts here at Duke, particularly Duke Primary Care’s efforts to improve care and quality, given examples of the challenges and opportunities for improving care for patients with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes. He emphasized the necessity of interdisciplinary teams in this process, and the the use of data to drive decision making and measure success.

A big thank you to Dr. Shah for his excellent talk, and to all the student participants!

Recap: QISP Annual Symposium- 4/20

IMG_3409Thank you to all who attended IHI’s Annual Quality & Innovations Scholars Program Symposium, our capstone event for the year.

The event showcased the work of the 2015-2016 Quality & Innovation Scholars to an audience of over 50 students across the schools of medicine, nursing, business, engineering, public policy, global health, as well as physicians and administrators from many departments of DUHS.

We learned about the efforts of 12 practicum teams through poster exhibitions and of six teams through brief oral presentations. In recognition of their work, Elliot Le (SOM) and Patrick O’Shea (Fuqua/UNC SOM) were awarded full travel scholarships ($1,000 each) to present their project “Standardizing Text Paging to Improve Physician-Nurse Communication: A Pilot Study” at IHI’s National Forum in Orlando, Florida in December 2016. They were mentored by Alicia Clark, MD and Lindsay Boole, MD. Yingna Liu (SOM) and Lauren Teague (SON) each received partial travel scholarships ($500 each) for their project entitled “Standardizing Protocols in the Duke Outpatient Clinic.” They were mentored by Julia Gamble, NP and Lynn Bowlby, MD.

We capped off the evening by hearing from a panel of DUHS leaders: Jon Bae, MD; George Cheely, MD, MBA; Heather Marstiller, MBA; Cary Ward, MD; Janet Bettger, DSc, FAHA. Their discussion added insightful context to the work these students and their mentors have put in over the past academic year.

Congratulations again to the QISP Scholars on a fantastic year!

IMG_20160406_171552Thank you to all who attended IHI’s April OpSwap @ Fuqua with Dr. Jen Perkins, MBA. About 30 students were in attendance from across the schools of medicine, business, policy, and nursing.

Through practical case-based discussion, the attendees learned the challenges of provider scheduling and how to maximize patient access in the common scenario of patient demand exceeding clinic supply.

Student feedback was very positive, including:

“Dr. Perkins was practical and the case study made the session superb. More training on how to do healthcare operations would be even better!”

“The case discussion was really interesting and seemed very relevant to problems we might face in the future.”

A special thank you also to the Fuqua Health Sector Management program for generously co-sponsoring this event.
