Jeff Basile will present the IBD paper by Brian Feagan et al from NEJM: Vedolizumab as induction and maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis. 369: 699-710. 2013. PMID 23964932. There is also a recent Cochrane Review on vedolizumab from 2014. PMID 25105240.

Matt Kappus will present a Hepatology paper by Goh et al: Coffee, alcohol and other beverages in relation to cirrhosis mortality: the Singapore Chinese health study. 60: 661-669. 2014. PMID 24753005. There is an accompanying editorial by Dranoff et al. PMID 24464631.

Cristal Brown will present a paper from Liver Transplantation by Hameed et al: Alpha-fetoprotein level > 1000 ng/mL as an exclusion criteria for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma meeting the Milan criteria. 20: 945-951. 2014. PMID 2479281.

Cindy Moylan will present a paper from the Journal of Hepatology: Carriage of the PNPLA3 rs738409 C > G polymorphism confers an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease associated hepatocellular carcinoma. 61: 75-81. 2014. PMID 24607626.

And because it has been in the press so much this week, I’m including the Nature paper by Suez et al: Artificial Sweeteners induce glucose intolerance by altering the gut microbiota. PMID 25231862.

Welcome back to GI Journal Club!

Note that the 2014-2015 schedule has been posted.

At GI Journal Club on Aug 26th, we will review the format of journal club as well as goals and expectations. We’ll review some EBM resources as well.

We’ll also review the recently FDA-approved stool-DNA (Cologuard) test and the data presented in the April 2014 NEJM article by Imperiale et al. PMID 24645800.

There is also an ACP Journal Club review of this new screening test for colorectal cancer.
