January 2012 Journal Club Articles

Hello Everyone and Happy 2012. We have a great bunch of papers to review in preparation for the January 24, 2012 journal club.

Tony Tran will be presenting the IBD paper by Sandborn et al entitled: Certolizumab pegol for active Crohn’s disease: a placebo-controlled, randomized trial (PMID 21642014)

Travis Cox will be presenting the esophagus paper from Liao et al in Gastroenterology 2011: Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Use Reduces Risk of Adenocarcinomas of the Esophagus and Esophagogastric Junction in a Pooled Analysis (PMID 22108196). This paper can also be found through the Gastroenterology website.

Jay Pyrtle will be presenting the “hot topic” paper by from JAMA by Ferlitsch et al entitled: Sex-specific prevalence of adenomas, advanced adenomas, and colorectal cancer in individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy (PMID 21954479)

If time permits, Dr. Poleski will discuss one or two other recent IBD papers: Alterations in the gut microbiome of children with severe ulcerative colitis by Michail et al (PMID 22170749) and Switch to adalimumab in patients with Crohn’s disease controlled by maintenance infliximab: prospective randomised SWITCH trial by Van Assche et al (PMID 21948942).

In addition, last year, Jay presented this paper at Journal Club: Fidaxomycin versus vancomycin for Clostridium Difficile Infection. This paper (PMID 21288078) will be reviewed at the medical school’s internal-medicine-interest-group journal club (coincidentally also 1/24/12).

A related paper: Comparative Effectiveness of Clostridium difficile Treatments: A Systematic Review (PMID: 22184691) was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on the different treatment strategies for c diff, and the consensus is that there is not one clear best choice, and more research is needed.

Happy reading!
