A virtual private network (VPN) allows for a secure connection into a private network over the public network. Although you are connecting from a remote location, the VPN makes the connection work as if you were on a direct connection into our network.
Depending on the configuration of your home computer, you may be able to login to http://portal.duke.edu using your NetID and have the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client automatically installed. However, due to recent security updates to Java and Apple’s OS X the automatic setup usually fails.
