October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Join us as Duke’s IT Security Office presents three Learn IT @ Lunch Sessions. Details below.
Trust and IT Security
Presenter: Artem Kazantsev, Sr Security Analyst, University IT Security Office
Do I click on a link in email? Should I buy sofa from a stranger on Craig’s list? Can I use my credit card abroad?… We face these or similar challenges every day. One underlying principal in all of them is the concept of trust. How do we establish trust relationships and what security repercussions those relationships create will be our topic.
Date: Wednesday, October 9
Time: noon – 1:00 p.m.
Location: RENCI Conference Room – OIT Telecommunications Building
Go Phish – Not as fun as it once was
Presenters: University IT Security Office Team
We’ll demo how easily attackers can craft phishing emails and why they’re so effective. Learn some of the common tactics utilized by attackers to help better protect yourself, friends, and family from such a dangerous threat. We’ll cover efforts Duke takes to thwart such activities then open the panel up to discussions with those in attendance. We’re looking for feedback from the community to help determine which areas work best in raising awareness and hope to brainstorm ideas that may present a new spin to this ever present topic.
Date: Wednesday, October 16
Time: noon – 1:00 p.m.
Location: RENCI Conference Room – OIT Telecommunications Building
Pretty Fly for a WiFi
Presenter: Phillip Batton, Security Analyst, University IT Security
Open, public WiFi hotspots are all around. Whether it’s in your own home, the local coffee shop, an airport, or hotel we’ve all used wireless networks that we didn’t configure or don’t own.
During this IT Security awareness presentation we’ll:
- demo common WiFi attacks
- discuss what precautions one should take when connecting to untrusted networks
- cover why the VPN is so important
- outline best practices to help you ensure your home network is more secure
Date: Wednesday, October 23
Time: noon – 1:00 p.m.
Location: RENCI Conference Room – OIT Telecommunications Building

Learn IT @ Lunch is designed to be an opportunity to learn about technology in a relaxed lunch environment. Each session includes a presentation followed by Q & A. No pre-registration is required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. NOTE: Lunch is not provided. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.
How do I access the RENCI Conference Room – OIT Telecommunications Building if I’m coming from the Smith Warehouse/East Campus area?
Hi Deborah, The RENCI conference room is in the telcom. bldg. (off research drive, right down the stairs from Perkins & Bostock). Here’s the link on the campus map. http://myatlascms.com/map/?id=21&mrkId=2765 From Smith you should be able to get a bus or ask your dept. if they have a campus parking pass. Best, ~Christine
I am very interested in computer and network security and eager to attend these session but they all take place during my class time. Would you please consider offering additional sessions at different hours?
Thank you
Sally
