Advancing and integrating diversity, equity and inclusion within the Duke Identity and Diversity Lab is critical to our existence. To be effective researchers and colleagues we need a highly diverse team that allows all individuals to retain their uniqueness and their sense of belonging. Therefore, we have zero tolerance for all forms of bigotry including racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, xenophobia, transphobia, ageism and ableism. We believe in accountability and are therefore expected to address any encountered behavior or statement of hate and discrimination.

Our lab goes further than to expand social identity, attitudes, and perception research– we are committed to amplifying underrepresented voices of diverse backgrounds. We strive to produce work that overcomes socioeconomic and other systemic barriers that are experienced by individuals on a local to institutional scale.

The following statements are representative of our professional and personal values as a lab community:

We pledge to maintain a diverse, safe and inclusive environment where we embrace difference and support one another as researchers, in addition to whole individuals outside of the lab.

We aim to create a culture within academia that encourages respect, transparency, and challenging conversations. We present an evolving, intellectual space to offer distinct perspectives (without hierarchy) and constructive criticism.

Integrity is one of our core principles. We expect members to abide by the rules governing data, participant and other research-related confidentiality.

We are still learning new ways to adapt to our changing world, but have all made a long-term commitment to this work. We hope that you will join us, continue to challenge us, and push us to maintain accountability going forward.
