Definitions

  1. Accessibility – Accessibility makes something usable for everyone, not just some.
  2. Accommodation – An accommodation is requested by the student and requires documentation to be approved to give them equal access to materials and course content. It can vary from having a sign language interpreter to assistive technology.
  3. Alternative text – Also referred to as Alt Text.
  4. Learning Management System (LMS) – An example of an LMS we use is Canvas. Other LMS’s are Blackboard, Moodle, Sakai, and D2L.
  5. OCR – Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts images of texts into machine-encoded text. In the Divinity School, typically this is a PDF that converts the text into highlightable, readable text.
  6. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) –UDL is creating learning that is accessible to everyone, regardless of their specific circumstances.
