A Bigger Shib: Using Federated Authentication on Your Web Resources

Shibboleth is a powerful web-based tool for authentication that is widely deployed at Duke and at many other universities around the nation. At Duke, “Shib” is primarily used for the local university community, but it can also be used to leverage authentication services at other InCommon institutions, making scholarly collaborations easier and more secure. This workshop goes through the mechanics of setting up Shibboleth and harnessing it’s “federation” features for inter-institutional use of Duke services. The workshop showcases work done with the support the the National Science Foundation to broaden the range of web-based tools and increase the power of trust-based technologies like Shibboleth.

Lunch will be provided to registered participants.

Date: Tuesday, July 12
Time:  11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: The Edge Workshop Room, Bostock Library
Registration:  training.oit.duke.edu/research

Splunk for Researchers – learn what powerful search is all about!

Learn what Splunk is, the power behind it’s engine and how it can be used in research. Morning refreshments and pastries will be provided. Splunk representatives and OIT Research Computing staff will be available before and after the session for 1-1 consulting and Q&A. For information about Splunk at Duke, visit oit.duke.edu/about/metrics/splunk.php

Date: Thursday, May 5
Time: 9:30-11:00 a.m.
Location: The Edge Workshop Room (Bostock Library)

Also, we still have seats available for Splunk Search Party for IT Professionals sessions on either May 5 or May 6.

Microsoft Cloud Computing Immersion Experience for Researchers

Duke University Libraries has partnered with Microsoft to host a workshop about Cloud Computing and how use this technology to help solve the technical side of your research projects. We invite you to spend some time in this Immersion Experience and see how Microsoft Research use Cloud Computing every day to solve difficult research problems. This event will cover a wide variety of cloud computing topics including:

  • Machine Learning & using R for performing predictive analytics on large
    volumes of semi-structured data
  • Storage – how to use the cloud to store & process large volumes of data
  • Stream Analytics and the Internet of Things, giving the ability to
query and analyze high-velocity data streaming from all kinds of data
    sources in real time
  • Big-Data / Hadoop – how to deploy a Linux Spark cluster, and other
tools for analyzing Big Data such as Hadoop, Spark, and Zeppelin.
  • High Performance Computing – how to bring thousands of computing cores
online to perform massive parallel processing
  • Use “Database-as-a-Service” instead of creating complete Database erver VMs

If you wish to do the hands-on labs that are presented during class, you will need a laptop of some kind (Windows, Linux, or Mac) along with a modern browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. No other software is required.

We will also have some representatives from Microsoft for some open Q&A sessions during the event.

We anticipate a high demand for this event; however, seating is limited, and registration is required.

Research Toolkits pilot announcement

OIT just announced a pilot of Research Toolkits, a web-based service that allows researchers to request longer-term virtual machines (VMs) and data storage for research projects. The service is available to regular rank faculty and their designees, and enables them to manage requests, add team collaborators and manage permissions. For details and to access Research Toolkits, visit: https://rtoolkits.web.duke.edu/.

Registration Open: Getting Started with Julia

Julia is a new programming language for numerical computing that aims to
