“Duke Media Services Tour”
Duke Media Services (DMS) will host a tour of their studio facilities for us. You’ll be able to learn about some of the functions a video studio with skilled videographers can offer you! This should be a lot of fun as well as educational.
Note: After the tour, the group is planning to go to The Loop at the Bryan Center for an informal lunch. (Note: Lunch is not provided. Plan to pay for your own order.)

“Creating Accessible Multimedia”
Presented by: Bianca Taylor, Disability Services and Assistive Technology Coordinator, and Dot Mishoe, Student Disability Access Office Director and Steve Toback, Senior Manager/Media Architect in Interactive Technology Services, Academic Technology Services, OIT
The Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) will present an overview of the various legal obligations for multimedia accessibility. Resources that are available to assist in creating accessible multimedia will also be discussed.

ViTaL Interest Group Meeting: “3D Video: Ready for (Educational) Prime Time?”

“3D Video: Ready for (Educational) Prime Time?”
Presented by: Steve Toback, Senior Manager/Media Architect in Interactive Technology Services, Academic Technology Services, OIT
You’ve seen 3D movies (haven’t you?), but does it take an epic blockbuster budget to create 3D content? During the first 30 minutes of this meeting, Steve Toback will show you that it does not take a huge budget or specialized skills to delve into 3D video. He’ll talk about (and show!) some affordable options for creating and showing 3D content. During the second half of the meeting, we’ll discuss the use of 3D content in teaching and learning: What kind of content do we want and need? What barriers exist to using 3D content in education? What can we do to break down those barriers? You’ll leave this session better able to think about how 3D content can and should be used in teaching and learning now and in the future.

ViTaL Brown Bag: Thinking Outside of the Frame
Join the Duke Digital Initiative in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for the next Videos in Teaching & Learning (ViTaL) interest group brown bag:
“Thinking Outside of the Frame”
Creating your own videos? Want some tips on how to make them better? Mich Donovan of the DDI will suggest options for microphone and camera placement, how to address lighting needs with minimal time and resources, the role of the background and alternative framing options, and what the rule-of-thirds is and how to apply it to your videos. He’ll also talk about how to adapt your in-class teaching to teaching in front of a camera including tips like using notes and a teleprompter, along with some tips about using your voice effectively. You’ll learn some options for evolving past the picture-in-picture video option (where a video of the speaker appears in a corner of the presentation slides) by merging the webcam video with your presentation. Mich will focus on using the video laptop kit, but the tips should be useful no matter how you’re creating videos.

Upcoming Videos in Teaching and Learning (ViTaL) Opportunities
The Duke Digital Initiative in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) has two upcoming opportunities for those interested in created video for educational purposes through the Videos in Teaching and Learning (ViTaL) program:
1) ViTal Interest Group Meeting: “Creating Videos Using a Laptop Kit”
Date: Thursday, November 21

It is possible to create good quality lecture videos at your desk using some basic components. This session will describe the video kit Duke faculty have used to create videos for Coursera MOOCs and how it can be used to capture, audio, video, and presentation slides. A new video service will be announced during this meeting, so be sure to come hear about a new option you will have for creating video!
Meetings are open to faculty, staff, and students, although topics will focus on faculty interests.
2) Free Seminar: “Developing Videos in Teaching & Learning”

Are you interested in using videos to support teaching and learning? In this session, we’ll demo the ViTaL (Videos in Teaching & Learning) video kits and discuss how they can be used in the classroom. We’ll talk about how to set up the kit, different methods for recording, resources that are available to assist, and will briefly mention what you can do with your videos once you’ve made them. NOTE: This seminar is open to anyone who is interested in creating videos in teaching in learning. Check out the video camera kits is currently limited to faculty.

ViTaL Brown Bag: Where Can I Go for Video?

There are a number of places on the Duke campus that support video needs. Members of this panel will give a brief description of the services that are available to you (free or fee) through their organizations so you can identify the ones that might be able to help you get a project started or finished. You’ll be able to hear about DukeCapture (Todd Stabley), the Multimedia Project Studios (MPS) (Jack D’Ardenne), Duke Media Services (Scott Wells), the Center for Instructional Technology (Randy Riddle), and the Link (Erin Nettifee).
