Cellular factors regulating EBV infection in epithelial cells

Despite extensive studies of the EBV-infected B cell latency reservoir and lymphomagenesis, the EBV-positive cancer affecting the most people is gastric cancer with nearly 10% of these tumors harboring the virus. In addition, EBV is virtually 100% associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In recent years, de novo infection of epithelial cells by EBV has been used to characterize latency establishment and pathogenesis. However, similar to B cell infection, this process is highly inefficient. Given our background in characterizing host restriction factors in the B cell system, we have begun to define those factors preventing EBV latent infection and tumorigenesis in epithelial cells.
