CULTURAL MEMORY

How do verbal and visual fictions construct the past, commemorate its actors, revise memory? For whom?

The seminar considers several major debates in literary, cultural, and historical studies including Rancière on ’anachrony’; Ricœur on memory and forgetting; Hartog on presentism.

Duke Library & Museum provide sites for studying institutions of memory: treasure house & mass medium.

Works in French are the initial material for investigation, and are paired across genres and time periods such as: franco-arabic debates on religion with Rachid Boudjedra and Honorat Bovet.

In this seminar-workshop, students develop their own research projects in a variety of fields.
