Work With Us

We need Duke students!

Each year, we work with Duke undergrad and grad students to support our programming. There are three opportunities to partner with us:

  1. Hackathon: 1 day, volunteer position
  2. Summer Design Camp: 3-5 weeks, paid position
  3. Technical Education Specialist: schedule varies, paid position

We welcome Duke engineering students who are excited to work with middle and high school students to learn more and apply!

Hackathon TA

Friday, March 28, 2025 from 9am-3pm

We will need 2-4 Duke students to support this day-long Hackathon for middle school students. Responsibilities include welcoming students to campus and assisting students through guided activities and low-fidelity prototyping in the POD.

This is a volunteer position.

Application will open in early February. Check back here to apply.

Summer Design Camp TA

June 23-July 24, 2025 from 9am-4pm on Monday-Thursday

We are looking for 4-6 teaching assistants to support the ODE Summer Design Camp. TAs will work with Prof. Aaron Kyle and lab staff to support and guide high school students through the design and prototyping process, as well as support DPS teachers as they learn technical skills to bring back to their classrooms. TA responsibilities include providing technical guidance and leading summer camp social activities (i.e., supervising lunch, leading a weekly campus tour, and engaging with students to help them feel welcomed on Duke’s campus).  In addition to the regular schedule, TAs should plan to attend the Final Presentations from 4-8pm on Thursday, July 24.

This is a paid position. We offer 5-week long and 3-week long positions.

Application will open in April. We encourage you to reach out to us earlier if you are interested and determining your summer plans.

Technical Education Specialist

Schedule varies

We are looking for 1-2 specialists to travel to DPS middle and high schools to provide technical support to ODE teachers as they incorporate Engineering Design into their lessons. Following the teacher’s lead, specialists will work with middle and high school students as they learn and apply technical skills.

The schedule is determined by the teachers’ needs. Currently, this is what we anticipate:

  • December: 1 week (exact dates TBD) from 10:30am-4:30pm

  • January-May: 3-5 times/week from 2:30pm-4:30pm

This is a paid position.

Application is now open. Apply via the listing on Duke’s JobX website
