The ODE Summer Design Camp is an immersive biomedical engineering design experience. Over the course of five weeks, participants will learn about the engineering design process and use it to solve real-world problems through a series of design workshops, labs, and innovation sessions.
This camp is a non-residential summer program for students from Durham and the RTP area. Students will come to Duke’s campus each day and head home at the end of the day’s activities.
The next Summer Design Camp takes place June 23-July 24, 2025.
Summer Design Camp is FREE for participants and meals are provided!
On Monday through Thursday each week, students will participate in a series of design workshops, labs, lectures, guest speakers, and innovation sessions focused on engineering design. Participants will quickly begin applying conceptual knowledge to real-world problems–they will use the engineering design process to uncover biomedical needs and create prototype biomedical devices.
Students will be invited to present their projects to an audience of family members and local experts at the end of the camp. Previous student projects have included a water filtration system for low resource settings, a thermal monitor for early diaper rash detection, and a needle sterilization system to prevent secondary puncture infections.
Check out this student project from last summer in the video below. You can see all of the 2023 student projects here!
Camp meets from 10am-3pm on Monday-Thursday each week.
Since students work in teams, it is essential for each student to be present every day.
Mark your calendars: Final presentations take place on Thursday, July 24 from 5:30-7pm on Duke’s campus. Families are invited to attend!
Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders are invited to apply!
Priority is given to Durham Public School students, but we accept applications from all high schools in North Carolina. However, please note that this is a non-residential camp–we do not provide housing or supervision beyond the daily camp activities.
