Kreyòl in Durham & Duke

Welcome to this page. We hope you will visit it regularly. On this page you will find different activities that can help you to learn Kreyòl with us. The site is divided into five sections:

  1. In the first section, students from Duke, Vanderbilt, the University of Virginia, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel hill share some audio materials with you. These audio materials are based on their experiences learning the language as well as their life at their respective universities. For each of these audio materials, questions are available to test your understanding of the materials.
  2. In the second section, you will find a lot Kreyòl resources such as radio broadcasts, newspapers from Haiti and from the Haitian diaspora in the United States.
  3. In the third section, there are interviews done by some students with Haitians living in North Carolina, especially in the triangle area (Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro). In these interviews, you will discover a lot of professional Haitians that have been settled in the area for years, and other Haitians who have just arrived in the community and are trying to make their way.
  4. In the fourth section, there is a series of Haitian proverbs. These proverbs are organized by theme with a short explanation for each proverb to help people to understand them.
  5. In the fifth section, you will find some good Haitian music along with the lyrics and a short summary of the song in English to help you understand what it is about. All these parts have only one objective, which is to help you understand the language and to have a better grasp of the soul of the country. Later, we will add other parts to help immerse you in the culture and the language of the country. We invite you to walk with us. Feel free to tell us what you think.
