Dr. Phil Smith

Phil Smith graduated from Duke (1985) with a BS in Mathematics and Vanderbilt (1987) with an MS in Mathematics. He then moved to Northern California, where he briefly taught high school mathematics at a small private school. In 1989, he accepted a full-time teaching position at American River College, a public community college in Sacramento, where he is currently Co-Chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. While teaching at ARC, he enrolled in a graduate program at the University of California, Davis, where he was awarded a PhD in Mathematics Education in 1998.
Phil was a first-generation college student who is passionate about developing innovative ways to help students learn.
