Rooted in Fables

Bend in the Wind: A Collection of Nature Fables: At the heart of the Ready, Set, Resilience curriculum, Bend in the Wind offers nine original fables crafted by Duke students. Each story draws on examples from the natural world to illuminate the tenets of personal resilience, optimism, adaptability, connection, and more, making these concepts relatable and engaging for middle school students.

Growing in Resilience

The RSR Activity Booklet and Teacher’s Card were co-created by Carteret County Public School teachers, and faculties and students from the Duke Marine Lab and NC State University. Together, they form a hands-on curriculum that connects personal, ecological, and community resilience in ways that are engaging and accessible for classrooms.

“A student pointed out how a bending tree was determined to stay alive by supporting one of its branches against a nearby tree. She said, ‘That’s resilience.’ It was a truly powerful moment that showed how deeply the curriculum had impacted her understanding.”
