Join our Student Scientist program
Are you interested in gaining leadership skills? Understanding our local ecosystems? Having fun? Making some money? Then apply to become one of Duke University Marine Lab’s (DUML) Student Scientists! As a DUML Student Scientist, you will explore your local ecosystem, become a mentor, deliver hands-on STEAM outreach, AND get paid.
Detailed information and requirements: The DUML Student Scientist program seeks talented Carteret County high school students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- The program is open to all interested 9th – 12th graders in Carteret County (the grade you are in, as of February 2025).
- Students Scientists must commit to minimum 120 hrs of community science outreach in June and July. Potential shifts will occur Monday-Friday in June and July for approximately 6 hours each day (with a maximum of 30 hours/week). All Student Scientists who conduct community outreach are eligible for summer stipends- paid at the completion of the program.
- Upon acceptance to the Student Scientist program, students will be required to attend training sessions on June 17th and 18th 2025 from 9am – 3:00 pm at the Duke university Marine Lab. Food and beverage will be provided. If a Student Scientist fails to attend the training, they will be unable to participate during the 2025 season.
- CCATS transportation vouchers available upon request for any student needing transportation assistance.
For Returning Student Scientists:
- We are now also accepting applications for 2-4 returning Student Scientists – these are students who successfully worked with us in a previous summer.
- Returning student scientists must complete the application. Please note, that the returning student scientist application will have different/additional questions.
- If accepted, Returning student scientists will have additional responsibility and a greater leadership role in the program.
The Application Process:
- Applications are being accepted through March 28, 2025.
- All sections (questions and reference information) must be submitted for full consideration.
- Your answers will not be saved in the application form- look through all the questions and write down all your answers in a separate document if you are unable to fill it out in one sitting.
- You will be required to provide contact information for a teacher or school counselor at your school. Please submit their contact information into your application. The DUML Community Science team will contact your teacher/counselor with a reference form.
- If accepted to the program, the student must attend orientation before starting his/her DUML Science Student Scientist program (June 17 and 18, 2025).
