Sara Payne – Graduate Student

Sara graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Spanish and Latin American Cultures.  As an undergraduate, she spent two years in Krista McGuire’s laboratory evaluating the diversity and dynamics of soil fungi in urban ecosystems.  Upon graduation, she worked with Teresa Bowman as a research technician studying zebrafish blood stem cell development and function to gain insight into myelodysplastic syndromes. Sara entered Duke through the Cell & Molecular Biology program and affiliated with the Cell Biology program. Early in her PhD, she investigated germ-stem cell niche dynamics and later in her PhD, she shifted towards understanding basement membrane-basement membrane interactions. Outside of the lab, she enjoys baking, playing soccer, and hiking with her dog Josie.
