Duke Global Health Institute’s Mike Landry Brings Rehab Expertise to Nepal

Chief Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy Division, Michel Landry, is on a 3-month assignment for the World Health Organization providing support for the earthquake stricken people of Nepal.  Read how Dr. Landry is assisting with the delivery of humanitarian rehabilitation interventions with physical and occupational therapists not only improving individuals’ physical functioning, but also strengthening the overall health system by increasing the discharge rate of injured people, thereby enabling institutions to treat more patients.

Dr. Lou DeFrate Selected as the 2016 ACL Study Group Traveling Scientist

Lou DeFrateCongratulations to Dr. Lou DeFrate for being selected as the 2016 ACL Study Group Traveling Scientist.  Lou gets to a trip to Sweden to the ACL Study group as well as visits to a number of ACL research labs around the country.   The Orthopaedic Research Labs have been hosts for several of the ACL Traveling Scientists in the past, so it’s only fitting for Lou to receive this honor.

Katie Glass Receives the Prestigious Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine Young Investigator Award

Katie GlassCongratulations to Katie Glass, a biomedical engineering PhD student in Dr. Guilak’s laboratory, for winning the prestigous Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine Young Investigator Award.  There was a highly competitive slate of candidates this year and receiving this award is indeed an outstanding achievement.  Katie will receive the award at a ceremony at the 2015 4th TERMIS World Congress in Boston, MA next week.

2015 Orthopaedic Surgery Welcome Party –

2015 Ortho Welcome Party

On Saturday, August 29th, the department hosted the annual Orthopaedic Surgery Welcome Party at the Tobacco Road Sports Cafe during a home Durham Bulls baseball game.  The evening was celebrated with a great baseball game, food and kid-friendly activities.  In addition to all the fun activities, a raffle kicked off the game with great prizes from The Washington Duke, Parizade Restaurant, Nosh Restaurant and an autographed football signed by Duke Blue Devils head coach, David Cutcliffe.

Duke Sports Medicine Providing Medical Coverage for the 2015 World University Games

IMG_0175Duke Sports Medicine is taking care of Team USA in Guangju, Korea for the World University Games.  The medical team is lead by Dr. Ron Olson.  The team also includes Duke Sports Medicine Physician, Blake Boggess, DO and Director of Sports Physical Therapy, Robert Bruzga, PT.  The physical therapy team also includes Paul Salamh and Shefali Christopher as well as 8 Duke physical therapy students.

Dr. Olson and Dr. Boggess also organized the 3rd International Sports Medicine Symposium for the World University Games. There were speakers from around the world and 72 international sports medicine physicians and physical therapists in attendance. There were formal lectures and hands on sessions for Graston training, dry needling, cardiac evaluation and sports ultrasound.

 The sports medicine not only has been taking care of Team USA but has been helping out with other countries such as Senegal, Estonia, Ireland, and Finland.

The World University Games is the American term for Universiade, which is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The games are 12 days of sports competitions with over 9,000 student-athletes and officials from over 170 countries. The U.S. had over 470 athletes competing.
