Registration for Duke Classes (Duke students only)

Depending on your semester abroad, in mid-October or mid-March the Duke Office of the Registrar will send registration instructions to your Duke email account. Please check your Duke email account!

Information about your specific registration window will be listed on DukeHub.

The best way to register while away from Duke and keep track of your academic and financial records is through DukeHub. If you are unable to access the web from your study away site, you will be able to fax or email your registration information directly to the Office of the Registrar. Be sure to fax or email your registration before the opening of your window, and please include your name and student identification number. The Office of the Registrar will attempt to register you in the courses you select; however, they cannot put you on waitlists. If you use this method, be sure to include good alternates, with instructions on how you want them used. Remember that the limit is four academic courses during your registration window – you will have to pick up your fifth course yourself during drop/add.

Your contact for registration is:
Office of the University Registrar
Box 90754, Duke University
Durham, NC 27708-0754
Phone: 919-684-2813; fax: 919-684-4500
Email: registrar@duke.edu

As is the case in any registration, you must get permission numbers for any “permission only” courses directly from the instructor. We recommend that you ask a friend on campus to help you with this. These can be added just as easily after your window. Audits, and changes to the Pass/Fail option still require written permission, which you can arrange when you return to campus.

Course descriptions and major/minor information for each department can be found in the Bulletin of Undergraduate Instruction. You are advised to communicate with your academic advisors during the registration process to update them on the courses you are taking while abroad/away as well as to discuss your choices for the coming semester.

Program Evaluations

Near the end of your program, GEO will email you a link to an electronic evaluation of your study away program. These evaluations are extremely useful for future participants and are consulted frequently by faculty and staff. Results are sent to the program sponsors and on-site directors, and changes are frequently made in the programs in response to students’ comments. Please complete the evaluation as soon as possible after you receive the survey link.

For Duke students, failure to complete the evaluation by the announced deadline will result in a registration block on your student account for the following semester. Please complete the evaluation as soon as possible after you receive the survey link.

Part-Time Status for the Final Semester at Duke

Juniors studying away during the spring semester who intend to apply for part-time status in the last semester of their senior year must request permission from their academic dean by April 15 preceding the academic year in which the part-time semester will be taken.

Housing

Students who study away for the fall semester should plan to live on-campus when they return in the spring semester. Students are required to fulfill the 3-year/6-semester residency requirement.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who leave for study away in the fall, are not guaranteed a specific housing assignment, near a specific block, nor will they be able to swap with another student who is planning to study away and will need to apply for spring housing.

Students who plan to study away for the spring semester and are required to live on campus (sophomores and juniors) should apply for housing for the following fall as usual. See the Housing website for timelines and application instructions. Students who study away for the spring semester will be able to participate in the room selection process and select their room for fall.

Duke-Administered Summer Programs

Program Evaluations

Upon completion of your program, GEO will ask you to submit an electronic evaluation of your summer program. These evaluations are extremely useful for future participants and are consulted frequently by faculty and staff. Results are sent to program sponsors and on-site directors, and changes are frequently made in the programs in response to students’ comments. You will be sent the link to the online evaluation form in an email near the end of your Duke summer program. Please be sure to take the time to complete the online summer program evaluation as completely as possible; your feedback is invaluable.

Course Evaluations

In addition to an overall summer program evaluation, all students enrolled in a Duke-In summer program will have the opportunity toward the end of the program to complete individual course evaluations online for the one or two courses that comprise the Duke summer program. These confidential course evaluations are shared only with the Duke faculty director, faculty instructors, and GEO staff. The student feedback will be used to help make any necessary improvements to the course instruction in future years. Please complete the online course evaluations as fully as possible; your input is critical to the success of our summer programming. You will be able to access the course evaluation form by visiting https://eval-duke.evaluationkit.com/. Throughout the evaluation window, you will receive email notifications of your course(s) eligible for evaluation in the Watermark platform.
