All Programs
Duke University does not allow students, including non-Duke students studying on Duke-Administered programs, to take courses on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis while studying away. All courses must be taken for a grade to receive academic credit at Duke. This applies to courses taken for Duke credit and transfer credit on any study away program. If a course is offered only on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis, you need to select a different course.
Duke Credit Courses
In study away courses bearing Duke credit (taught on Duke-Administered programs), you will earn Duke grades that appear on your Duke transcript and are factored into your GPA. Your grades allow for continuation requirements are considered in determining your eligibility for academic honors and recognition such as Dean’s List.
Transfer Credit Courses
In study away courses approved for transfer credit, taken on hybrid Duke-Administered programs and Duke-Approved programs, you must take the course for a grade. You cannot take a course pass/fail. You must earn the U.S. equivalent of a C- or higher for the credit to transfer back to Duke. These credits/grades are not factored into your Duke GPA and will appear on your transcript as “TR” in place of the grade.
While on study away, you may not take ½ credit courses or courses that are a fraction of a credit, neither can you receive credit for online or hybrid presentation courses for credit.
If you earn below a C-, your course grade will be recorded on your Duke transcript as “TNC” (transfer no credit). TNC courses will not be factored into your GPA but may result in an underloading status. Underloading could result in academic probation or lack of continuation at Duke.
