Semester Programs
Duke Students
Students receiving need-based financial aid at Duke may use their funding to study away during the Fall and Spring Semesters. This aid is available for students to participate in the Marine Lab, a Duke-Administered, a Duke-Approved, or Petitioned program that takes place during the academic year. If you are traveling with a Duke-Administered program during the academic year, your cost will remain the same as a semester on Duke’s campus, even if your program is more expensive. If you are traveling with a Duke-Approved program, your cost will also remain the same provided the cost to attend the program does not exceed the cost of a semester at Duke. Eligible students may also receive financial aid for up to two summer terms to study away on Duke-administered programs. Please contact the Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support for further details.
Financial aid cannot be calculated until a study away agreement has been processed for a student. See https://globaled.duke.edu/academics/study_away_agreement.
Non-Duke students
Non-Duke students are not eligible for financial aid through Duke University. All non-Duke students should consult the financial aid office at their home institutions to apply for aid and obtain approval for outside scholarship sources. All non-Duke students must have a financial aid consortium agreement signed by their home institution’s financial aid office on file with GEO before you are eligible to study on a Duke program. If your home institution has its own consortium agreement for study abroad, please submit that form to GEO for approval. Otherwise, a generic Duke financial aid consortium agreement form is available in your MyExperientialEd application. All non-Duke students should submit a Third Party Billing Form: https://globaled.duke.edu/about/forms upon acceptance to ensure proper billing.
Summer Programs
Duke Students
Duke students eligible for need-based financial aid during the academic year may also be eligible for financial aid for up to two summer sessions. This aid is available for courses taken at Duke, at the Marine Lab, or as part of a Duke-Administered study away program. No institutional aid will be provided for non-Duke summer programs. Note: this policy does not apply to a summer study away program taken prior to matriculation or after graduation from Duke.
There is no separate summer financial aid application. Financial aid information for Duke-Administered summer study away programs is available from the Duke Karsh Office of Undergraduate Financial Support.
Non-Duke Students
Non-Duke students are not eligible for financial aid through Duke University. All non-Duke students should consult the financial aid office at their home institutions to apply for aid and obtain approval for outside scholarship sources.
Study Away Scholarships
GEO administers a handful of scholarships for summer study away programs. More information on these scholarships, plus a general database of study away scholarships, fellowships, and grants for all students can be found at https://globaled.duke.edu/finances/scholarships.
