Duke-Administered Programs
Costs
Program costs for Duke-Administered programs are based on Duke’s summer tuition and a program-specific fee. U.S.-based programs also include a separate housing fee. These costs are explained in the “Estimated Costs” section of each program’s webpage, including a link to a detailed program budget showing billable and non-billable program expenses.
Payments
Charges for Duke tuition, program fee and housing fee (for U.S.-based programs) will appear on your Duke Bursar account (billable program expenses). Other reasonable, personal expenses (non-billable program expenses) will be represented in the financial aid cost estimate provided for each program. GEO tries to identify all major expected out-of-pocket expenses, but cannot guarantee it will be able to include everything.
Non-Duke Students
Non-Duke students will also be billed via the Duke Bursar account, which is accessible using a Duke NetID and password. Non-Duke students are issued a NetID and password by the university’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) upon admission to a Duke In study away program. Emails containing NetID activation instructions are sent upon enrollment; please keep the information in a secure place.
For questions about your NetID and password, please contact the OIT Service Desk.
Duke-Approved Programs
Costs
Program costs for Duke-Approved programs are set by the program or university. Be sure to understand what is included in the program’s billed cost. Some programs set a more comprehensive program fee, including items such as housing, meals, insurance, etc, while others classify those as out-of-pocket expenses.
Payments
For Duke-Approved programs, Duke students will be billed directly by the program or university, and are responsible for paying all tuition and program fees by the deadlines established by the program or university. Students will also pay the study abroad fee, which will be billed through the student’s Bursar account.
In addition, students enrolled in Duke-Approved programs are obligated to pay for any and all goods and services that are identified as their responsibility in the program description provided by the non-Duke provider.
For example, host institutions may:
- Have lab fees for lab equipment or audiovisual materials which students are required to purchase to take a course,
- Assess charges based on damages to property or late fees for late return of library materials, or
- Offer options to use the institutional athletic center for a fee.
Study Abroad Fee
The Study Abroad Fee of $4,580 per semester will be charged by Duke University to students participating in Duke-Approved programs administered by institutions other than Duke University.
For more information about the Study Abroad Fee, please see the GEO website.
