The Duke University Global Education Office (GEO) is committed to inclusion on its study away programs. We work closely with Duke’s Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) to help students with disabilities request and receive approved accommodations on study away programs to the extent that they can be arranged, given local/foreign laws, infrastructure, and other considerations.
Please understand that we cannot guarantee that every approved accommodation can be implemented in every program location.
Students must renew their accommodations each semester through SDAO’s Accommodate system. A guide on semester renewal can be found here.
It may take a substantial amount of time and planning to arrange accommodations abroad, so it is important to reach out to GEO as early as possible to explore programs that fit your needs. This will allow sufficient time to explore options, determine the feasibility of getting specific accommodations in particular program locations, and arrange accommodations, if available.
If it should become apparent at any point in this process that your preferred program/program location cannot reasonably accommodate your specific needs, we will closely work with you to explore better-suited program options that can better meet your needs.
Registering for Accommodations on Study Away
For an overview of the process, please see Accommodating Students on Study Away Programs on the GEO Website.\
In general, you will need an up-to-date SDAO letter with the specific accommodations you are requesting, sent to geosdao@duke.edu. We will then work with you, the program which you will attend (whether Duke-Administered or Duke Approved) to try to accommodate your request.
Requesting a Single Room Accommodation on Study Away
If you have a Single Room Accommodation that you wish to use while studying away, please follow the instructions above (Accommodating Students on Study Away Programs) to submit your SDAO accommodations request to GEO within 2 weeks of acceptance into your study away program. You may not wait to apply for housing accommodations as they are often filled to capacity early in the process.
Requesting a Learning Accommodation
You will need to send your up-to-date SDAO letter or newly requested SDAO letter to geosdao@duke.edu. We will make every effort to try to assist you with your accommodation, but cannot guarantee all accommodations will be met.
