The Global Education Office Student Handbook

This handbook is meant for all students who are preparing to attend a Duke-Administered, Duke-Approved or Petitioned study away program through the Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO).  You will find important information regarding academics, finances, health, safety, and security, and the student experience.

We also invite students’ families to review this important information to help your student prepare for what is sure to be a life-changing experience away from Duke.

This information is regularly updated. If you have any questions about the contents of this handbook, we invite you to contact us at globaled@duke.edu.

In Case of Emergency

Duke-In Programs

In case of emergency, students should notify the following:

  1. Local authorities (if appropriate)
  2. On-site program director*
  3. Their family

*If unavailable, contact the on-call Office of Global Health and Safety Officer (919) 452-9546.

The on-site program director will initiate Duke emergency protocols by notifying Duke’s Global Education Office (GEO) about the emergency.

Duke-Approved Programs

In case of emergency, students should notify the following:

  1. Local authorities (if appropriate)
  2. On-site program director
  3. Their families
  4. Duke’s Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO)

GEO will usually learn of the emergency situation from the relevant program provider and will then help resolve the situation as needed. However, if for some reason students cannot get in touch with their program’s support staff, GEO will do what it can to assist.
