Description of the module
This module explains why drinking alcohol during pregnancy can be harmful to the developing baby (including the brain). Students will learn about the normal development of a fetus and how exposure of the fetus to alcohol causes physical and/or neurological/behavioral problems, resulting in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The module covers concepts in biology, chemistry, and math, including:
- normal and abnormal human development
- anatomy of the brain
- localization of brain functions
- development of the brain
- neurogenesis
- cell death (apoptosis)
- chemical reactions (oxidation and oxygen radicals)
