Description of the module

This module explains why drinking alcohol during pregnancy can be harmful to the developing baby (including the brain). Students will learn about the normal development of a fetus and how exposure of the fetus to alcohol causes physical and/or neurological/behavioral problems, resulting in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The module covers concepts in biology, chemistry, and math, including:

1. normal and abnormal human development
2. anatomy of the brain
3. localization of brain functions
4. development of the brain
5. neurogenesis
6. cell death (apoptosis)
7. chemical reactions (oxidation and oxygen radicals)
