Learning Objectives

After participating in this module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • List 3 physical, behavioral, and cognitive abnormalities of a child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.
  • Describe the physiochemical features of alcohol that explain its ability to cross the placenta so easily.
  • List the steps in neurogenesis.
  • Define “oxygen radical.”
  • Explain why oxygen radicals are unstable.
  • Explain why a reactive oxygen species can be damaging to cells.
  • List the regions of the brain that are the most sensitive to alcohol exposure during development.

After participating in this module, it is expected that students may be able to:

  • Describe the features of a compound that would enhance its ability to cross the placenta.
  • Explain why alcohol exposure at different times of development can cause different effects.
  • Identify specific brain regions that underlie specific behaviors.
