While the pandemic has made it clear that health crises impact some communities more than others, it is crucial we recognize that the social determinants of health have always been – and will continue to be – at play. At Duke, I have been able to engage in public health research, work that informs broader health systems and policy. At the same time, I want to join the effort on the ground and do whatever I can to support people one-on-one. Whether that means linking patients to community resources or just lending them a listening ear, I want to be there for people, no matter their circumstances. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Help Desk and work alongside my fellow volunteers and Durham community.
