During my time at Duke, I have studied the science of human health, but I have become increasingly aware of the effects of the social determinants of health on wellbeing. In my experience with volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, I gained an understanding of the importance of these social and environmental factors and wanted to continue my exploration of the influence of these factors through the Help Desk program. Through working with Help Desk, I hope to learn the stories of the people in Durham and become more adept at helping and understanding vulnerable populations. In the future, I hope to become a physician and use my experience to treat patients with a more well-rounded understanding of both their healthcare and social needs. With the Help Desk program, I look forward to learning the stories of the patients at Lincoln Community Health Center and serving the Durham community.
