AMITESH VERMA
Program Coordinator, Neuroscience (B.S), Class of 2025
My name is Amitesh Verma, and I’m a fourth-year Neuroscience major with minors in Chemistry and Music. My passion for medicine stems from its holistic nature — recognizing that beyond the pathology of illness, a person’s diverse background and social context play a pivotal role in overall health. This interest led me to join Help Desk during my freshman year, where I served as a Community Resource Navigator in the Duke Emergency Department amidst the pandemic’s surge in housing and food insecurity. Inspired by Help Desk’s innovative model, I pursued leadership, eventually becoming ED Site Coordinator to enhance our ability to screen for unmet health-related social needs and provide ongoing referrals. I was particularly driven to increase our utilization of NCCARE360, enabling organizations to proactively engage with patients and address their needs. Now, as Program Coordinator, I am excited to help expand our program to other institutions, promoting a culture of comprehensive care in the Durham community. Beyond Help Desk, I channel my passion for holistic medicine by designing arts interventions for healthcare settings and researching sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in the Mikati La
