Avari Wang
Programming Chair, Statistical Sciences (B.S.), Class of 2027
Hi! My name is Avari Wang (she/her), and I’m a junior majoring in Statistical Science. I first joined Help Desk after hearing about the organization from a friend, and through the past year, this organization has been one of my most meaningful experiences at Duke, both the patients we serve and for the volunteers involved. As a community resource navigator in the ED, I have greatly expanded my perspectives of the medical system, socially, culturally, and economically. I have seen how language barriers, financial constraints, and social isolation intersect to shape each patient’s experience, and how a tailored referral or even a few minutes of attentive listening can make a world of difference. In Help Desk, we strive to address patients’ non-medical needs that are often overlooked.
I am very grateful to the leadership team that trained me and taught me how to properly navigate this system to efficiently offer patients well-informed resources. I was inspired and joined Help Desk leadership to continue this cycle of mentorship, and hope to equip new volunteers with the knowledge, confidence, and compassion they need to deliver holistic care.
Outside of Help Desk, I tutor students of various ages and subjects, work at West End Communuity foundation, and am an athlete on Duke’s varsity dive team. I look forward to leveraging these experiences and skills to deepen Help Desk’s impact by building stronger community partnerships and ensuring an compassionate, inclusive environment for all patients and volunteers.
